NEWCASTLE SCHOOL SAFETY SURVEY

Please complete the Newcastle School Transport Safety Survey.

Parents of HSPA students are encouraged to complete a survey about school transport safety in Newcastle.

This survey has been initiated by Tim Crakanthorp, NSW MP, to propose changes to improve safety around schools.

THIS IS THE EMAIL HE SENT TO OUR SCHOOL

As students headed back to school for 2020 I launched the Newcastle School Safety Survey, where parents, carers, school staff and local residents have the opportunity to raise safety concerns they have around Newcastle’s schools. The feedback I receive will then be used to lobby the NSW Government and City of Newcastle for improvements to traffic infrastructure around your school.

This could range from pedestrian refuges, to changes to parking conditions, to something as simple as moving signage. No idea is too big or too small and I welcome all feedback.

A Heart Foundation survey found that less than one third of Australian parents believed it was safe for their children to walk or ride to school, with factors in that belief including concerns about traffic volume and a lack of safe routes. As a result, 64 per cent of surveyed parents reported driving their children to school most days.

We know how important it is for our children to lead healthy lifestyles and selecting active transport options to travel to and from school supplements this, but safety always needs to come first. This is why I need to know what can be done to encourage more kids out of cars and onto the pavement.

As the P&C, I would appreciate if you could promote the survey throughout your community. The more responses I have, the more pressure I can apply for action to be taken.

The survey can be completed online at School Safety Survey and closes on Friday 13 March 2020.

Yours sincerely, Tim Crakanthorp MP, Member for Newcastle
