Learner Dashboard

HSPA Learner Dashboard

HSPA students and parents now have access to 24/7, live updates on all aspects of student learning, via the Learner Dashboard in Canvas. Below, left is the Full-length Video Tour, explaining how to access all features of the Dashboard. Watch this video for instructions on gaining unparalleled insight into learning progression in Curriculum (syllabus outcomes), Cross Curriculum (soft skills such as collaboration and critical thinking), Co-curriculum, and Commitment to School Values. Alternatively, the video is divided into smaller segments for ease of learning about the Learner Dashboard as needed.

The Learner Dashboard fosters a gamified, growth mindset for learning. It provides students with authentic digital badges that they can keep and use throughout their lives, and gives parents comprehensive, real-time updates on learning progression at a glance.

The HSPA Mastery Learning Cycle

These infographs explain how parents can support the HSPA Mastery Learning cycle, and what the process looks like for Secondary students. Please review the Learner Dashboard Roll-out timeline below, to find out when implementation begins for each year group.

Glossary of Terms

  • Assessment for Learning: Any assessment that serves the dual purpose of teaching and assessing simultaneously. For example, an open book quiz.
  • Baked Badge: Badges are provisional (temporary) until the end of a stage. At this point, HSPA 'bakes' them, which sends them to the student's Learner Backpack, transferring ownership and facilitating the sharing of badges with external agencies.
  • Corrective Task: A task provided to help a student better understand a concept or skill. This is usually implemented when students achieve Emerging or Developing badges.
  • Curriculum Badges: These are aligned with NESA syllabus outcomes. These subject-specific badges are awarded by class teachers based on the level of mastery students demonstrate during class activities & tasks. To 'Level Up,' students should reflect on task feedback and discuss options with their class teacher.
  • Cross Curriculum Badges: These are aligned with future-focused skills. These badges are awarded by class teachers and reflect the skills demonstrated by students across ALL classes and activities (averaged). To 'Level Up,' students should reflect on task feedback and discuss options with their class teachers.
  • Co-Curriculum Badges: These are designed by HSPA. Students apply for these highly prestigious badges via the submission of evidence portfolios. Applications are assessed only by expert staff. To 'Level Up,' students should refer to the criteria and application instructions.
  • Enrichment Task: A task provided to extend student knowledge or skills. This is usually given when a student achieves a Mastery or Advanced badge.
  • Formative Assessment: Assessment of learning which occurs during a learning cycle. Generally used to assess student understanding or skills and inform teachers and students of the next steps in the education process. The next steps following formative assessment are usually: Move on to the next topic, or engage in an enrichment activity, or attempt a corrective task. Formative assessment is considered lower stakes, and a practise for a more formal, summative assessment.
  • HSPA Mastery Levels: Emerging > Developing > Competent > Mastering > Advanced
  • Performance Descriptors: A description of the knowledge, skills, and abilities a student must possess to be determined as performing at a certain level (e.g., at a Mastery level).
  • Summative Assessment: Assessment of learning which occurs at the conclusion of a learning cycle.
