Y10 Service Learning & Interview Week

Y10 Service Learning and Interview Week

A very big thank you to Ms Miller, Mrs Maher, Mr Matthews, Ms Longobardi and the Year 10 team who have handled many projects during the last few weeks, including the interviews.

I spoke to a number of Year 10 students before and after their interviews, and they were all enthusiastic about the process. Despite their initial nerves, for most of them it was a learning experience from which they gained a great deal.

There was some extremely positive feedback too from members of the community involved in the interviews and in the projects around the school.

One group, in light of recent bushfires not only in our area but around the state, spent time time sewing care pouches for our injured native animals from fabrics donated by our school community.

The following email from Ms Batchelor is a lovely reflection about the Nova Care activity.

Hi Jo.

Just wanted to share with you the wonderful experience and opportunity YR10 have had this week working with Nova Care. I have attached some photos I have taken over the last couple of days.

On Monday we spent time chatting and getting to know each other, we did some portrait drawing and mural planning. Our students gained a lot from this session and very much enjoyed hearing about our guests lives. Tom attended our school when it was an all boys school and he sung his school song for us. Myah, Ayzia and Indi sang for the group - our guests were in awe.

On Tuesday we spent some more time getting comfortable with each other and created collage works together. Margaret told the students that she only ever hears bad things about their generation and that projects like this should be what they show on the news. She also told them how proud and honoured she was to be working with the kids. Myah and Ayzia sang again for our guests after a few requests.

Today our students began painting the boards for the mural, we had a lot of fun. A few of our guests popped in for half an hour to see how we are going. Margaret who frequents in the photos attached, told our students that she has been on such a high after the last few days so she couldnt sleep last night. Some of our Students got some photos framed that they had taken with her and gifted them, she was very moved by this.

Our students are very excited to work with some of the guests from Nova Care next Monday and Tuesday. This experience has been very rewarding for them and it has been very powerful watching it unfold. I think this is a wonderful project that Michelle and John have organised and it has been extremely valuable for our students.
