Jetson Buhlmann wins major photographic prize

Jetson Buhlmann from Hunter School of the Performing Arts has won the Student Category of the prestigious Moran Contemporary Photographic Prize. Jetson’s photograph ‘Waiting for Sunrise’ was announced as the winner receiving $2000 for both himself and his school in the Year 7/8 Student Category at an event at Juniper Hall in Sydney.

A record number of photographs were entered in the student categories of the 2019 Moran Contemporary Photographic Prize. This year’s student judges were respected photographers Sally Mayman (Years K--‐6), Nicki Jackson (Years 7--‐8), Jim Filmer (Years 9--‐10) and Louise Whelan (Years 11--‐12). Nicki Jackson said: "I’m always extremely excited to judge the student images. As Moran photography workshop presenters, we visit a huge variety of schools throughout Australia, from inner city to the outer suburbs and from country towns to the proverbial ‘Back of Bourke’. Regardless of the place, the students are always so engaged and the stories are real; bursting with nature, colour, mateship, hardship, humour and Aussie spirit! It’s a privilege to show Australia the voices of our students."

On the winning photo Nicki Jackson said: “The anticipation of a sunrise; its beauty, wonder and the possibility of a new story. An enchanted moment in which the world is luminous but not fully clear. The  student photographer had a clear vision of this story and has met the Moran Contemporary Photography Prize brief beautifully. The composition and use of light has been well planned and it is certainly an image we will all linger before and contemplate the stories of our own youth and the opportunities we took or missed. The excitement, the uncertainty, the risk, the challenge, the joy, the fear, the adventure of life! It’s all here in this image.”
